History of Old Town

Experience the story of the city; its history, rulers, inhabitants and architecture.

Old Town, or “Gamla stan” in Swedish, is as you may discern – very old! Located on a small island in the very heart of our capital, where Stockholm was born and raised 750 years ago. As the city expanded but the smallish ground remained, the buildings had to be constructed almost — or actually — on top of each other. It’s easy to get lost in the maze of narrow alleyways that intertwines with Old Town’s long history of cramped housing.

Let us help guide you through the winding cobblestone streets to where infamous events, facade decorations and street names together unveil Stockholm’s history.
