City Museum is mapping cultural heritage sites in Stockholm

Stockholm is currently working on a new Comprehensive Plan, which guides how land and areas in the city will be used in the future. Knowledge about the city’s cultural heritage is an important part of this plan.

Under the Swedish Planning and Building Act (as updated in 2025), local councils must highlight buildings, areas, and sites of special historical and cultural significance in their Comprehensive Plans.

There are still buildings and locations in Stockholm that the City Museum has not yet surveyed. Therefore, we are collecting information about these environments between 2026 and 2028.

This survey and classification process helps ensure that historical and cultural heritage is protected as the city grows and develops.

How the survey is conducted

• We only inspect and photograph places from streets and public areas.

• We do not enter any buildings.

• We do not enter private gardens or private courtyards.

This happens with the results

Buildings, areas, and sites identified as having particularly high historical value will be highlighted in the new Comprehensive Plan. We will also save this information in two databases:

Stockholm’s Cultural Heritage Classification Map

The local council uses this map as a guide when making decisions, such as reviewing planning permissions or approving developments.
