What was life like in Stockholm around 1900? This exhibition introduces you to residents from just before the advent of democracy — a tumultuous time of great contrasts.
Around 1900, Stockholm transformed from a rural archipelago town into a vibrant capital. The population doubled, and shopping streets, entertainment areas, and grand bank buildings emerged. New technologies changed daily life, and popular movements and entrepreneurship thrived. However, conflicts and tensions also arose.
“New Stockholm — Turn of the Century 1900” offers an exciting journey through time. Featuring rare objects, photos, art, drawings, and archival materials from the City Museum’s collections, you'll learn about the Stockholmers who shaped the city. Meet street children, moral advocates, photographers, writers, businesswomen, acrobats, variety performers, and a resistant king. Welcome to an exhibition that brings these stories to life.
