Hear works by Peterson-Berger, Stenhammar and Ravel in new arrangements for guitar.
Bacchus Guitar Quartet is made up of four young musicians. They perform well-known works with both respect and a playful spirit.
The concert begins with music by Wilhelm Peterson-Berger. This includes Entrance of the Summer Hays and Summer Song, one of his best-known works.
Peterson-Berger was not only a composer. He was also known as one of Sweden’s sharpest and most acerbic music critics. In Dagens Nyheter, he often attacked fellow composers. One of them was Stockholm-born Wilhelm Stenhammar, whose music features later in the concert.
Peterson-Berger described Stenhammar as “a highly interesting moral and psychological case”. He called his music “dry and empty of ideas”. Here, you can decide for yourself!
The highlight of the concert is Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F major, arranged for four guitars. Hear this well-known work in a completely new sound.
Peterson-Berger had strong opinions about French Impressionism too. He described it as “an overly intellectual and artificial fashion”.
